Musk lashes out: Government computers are too old, worse than '98! They can't even function properly.

Elon Musk criticized the outdated computer systems of the US government on December 9th and claimed that he would help the Trump administration reform as a volunteer IT consultant. He said that it was because the government did not upgrade hardware and technology, which led to a lot of taxpayers’ money being wasted and the efficiency being very poor.

Government computer equipment ‘worse than Windows 98’ is spraying

Musk said that the computer and software systems of the US government are so outdated that they cannot distinguish whether payments involve fraud or abuse, even leading to unclear flow of taxes. He sarcastically criticized the government, saying, ‘This is why the US government cannot pass a basic audit. They often don’t know where people’s taxes are being used, it’s insane.’

Some netizens also shared a photo of an old computer showing the Windows 98 boot screen under his post, and laughed that this is the computer currently used by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Musk responded directly, “I wish it were so, but in reality, it’s even worse than Windows 98.”

The old system and lack of accountability have led to exploding inefficiency.

Elon Musk said that the U.S. government’s spending on software is ‘seriously over budget,’ but these systems are not functioning properly. He believes the issue is not entirely due to malice, but because the massive bureaucratic system lacks accountability for results, resulting in a large number of public servants still using outdated and inadequate software and hardware.

He pointed out, ‘If these problems are intentional, they are relatively easy to solve.’ Musk emphasized that the real challenge lies in changing the inertia of this system and promoting the modernization of government’s technological infrastructure as a whole.

Blockchain is expected to become a solution for government efficiency.

Musk did not blame any political party, but focused on proposing technical solutions. He believes that blockchain technology may be the best way to accelerate government accountability and technological upgrades.

Previously, Trump had stated that he hoped to make the United States a global center for cryptocurrency and blockchain. Musk believes that the most basic feature of blockchain is ‘tamper resistance’. If blockchain is introduced into the US federal government, it can provide a permanent record of every transaction, greatly improving audit efficiency and tax transparency.
