Peter Todd advocates space encryption Mining: "Perhaps reasonable from an economic perspective"
Odaily Planet Daily News Canadian computer scientist and BTC core developer Peter Todd recently wrote a blog post describing the feasibility of building BTCMining facilities in space vacuum. Todd said that not only can Cryptocurrency Mining be conducted in space using existing technology, but it is also economically feasible if the cost of sending goods into space can be dropped.
The idea of Cryptocurrency Mining in space has been discussed in the community for years. Supporters often point out that space Mining operations can utilize infinite solar energy and leave no carbon footprint on Earth. However, opponents warn that due to the relatively high costs of deploying, building, and operating extraterrestrial mining facilities, inherent centralization may occur. In technical terms, it seems that both parties agree that even if it is economically feasible to launch such a project, it will be necessary to overcome some obstacles to conduct business in space.
His post questioned the assertion that cooling mining machines in space could be a problem, stating that the nature of space allows for radiative cooling, i.e. heat dissipation through radiation. He further added that with a combination of sun-synchronous orbit and proximal positioning, latency can be controlled to a negligible extent. In addition, Todd uses calculated and simplified explanations to support his point. According to Todd, ‘There is nothing fundamentally preventing space Mining from being possible.’ However, he then points out that the feasibility of this technology does not mean that such facilities will be built soon.
