The 14 countries of the Security Council call for immediate action to address the famine in Gaza.
Jin10 reported on August 28 that on August 27 local time, Guyana and Slovenia, as the informal joint coordinators of the Security Council’s “Conflict and Hunger Issues,” issued a joint statement at the United Nations Headquarters with all members of the Security Council except the United States, expressing shock and concern over the United Nations agency’s report confirming famine in the Gaza Strip. This is the first time a famine has been officially confirmed in the Middle East. Representatives of various countries emphasized that this is a “man-made crisis,” and the use of hunger as a weapon of war is explicitly prohibited under international humanitarian law. They called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire, demanded the release of all hostages, called for a massive increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza, and urged Israel to lift all restrictions on aid transport. The statement also called on Israel to withdraw its decision to expand military operations and occupy Gaza City to avoid further worsening the humanitarian situation.
