Sources: Modi absent from Malaysia summit due to concerns over Trump discussing Pakistan.
Jin10 Data reported on October 28th that, according to informed sources, Indian Prime Minister Modi did not attend the regional leaders' summit held in Malaysia this week to avoid a meeting with US President Trump and possibly discussing the Pakistan issue. Indian government officials are concerned that Trump may reiterate his own claim that he facilitated the ceasefire following the four-day armed conflict between India and Pakistan in May. The Indian side has consistently denied that Trump played a role in the ceasefire. Since the India-Pakistan conflict five months ago, India-US relations have deteriorated. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports in August, half of which was a punitive measure due to India purchasing Russian oil. Since then, trade negotiations between the two sides have been stalled with no clear progress. According to informed sources, Modi's team believes that a bilateral meeting with Trump in Malaysia will not yield substantial results. A phone call between the two leaders last week also failed to meet New Delhi's expectations.
